-Kickass Cover of the Day: Polar Bear Club-“At Your Funeral”-
Not even 2 seconds into this cover and the crowd at Montage has never sounded so in tune with one another. Not even 2 seconds in and everyone is on the same page, channeling their inner Chris Connollys. Polar Bear Club has done many a great things with their brand of hardcore punk, but this stands tall amongst their achievements.
It’s hard to touch the way they handled this cover, which is primarily due to that fact that it was just a barebones from the heart take. There’s no flair here and that’s what makes it even more striking. What starts as just throaty vocals and acoustic guitars evolves into a strong swinging choir of tens belting out the requiem that always stuck with them most. While vocalist Jimmy Stadt only hits his stride in the first pre-chorus, he carries tune genuinely to the infectious claps of the crowd and tastefully puts his own twist on it. For a band that was greatly influenced by Saves the Day they did a fantastic job capturing the soul of one of the most resonating emo anthems of the new millennium.
You can hear the entirety of Polar Bear Club’s set at The Montage on their new live release Live At The Montage. It is out today courtesy of Bridge Nine Records.
